“Tooth filling”- each one of us must have heard this word at least once in our lives and many of us must have even got it done too!!
Tooth filling is nothing new. But what is it ? What is the need for it? What all materials are available? Let’s know them one by one.
As the name itself tells – FILLING (something used to fill a hole )
So dental fillings are basically the materials used to fill the tooth cavity.
Anyone who has a tooth cavity which needs to be cleaned requires a tooth filling .
Cavity can happen on any surface of tooth be it the grinding/chewing surface or the smooth surface.
Also in some cases if the tooth gets chipped off or worn out then also you require a filling.
In the world of dentistry, there are plethora of options available.
Few of these in brief are:
GIC Fillings – these are high strength material mostly used in kids
Composite/laser filling – these are tooth colored filling material extremely durable and esthetic
Amalgam/silver fillings – These used to be a popular choice for a lot many years due to their remarkable strength but due to increasing mercury toxicity they have been discontinued
Crowns – for those teeth which cannot get strength only by fillings or have multiple decay or is root canal treated , your dentist will advice you to get a cap done.
